Kevin Chavez Steps Down, Women's Soccer under new Leadership.
Chandler, AZ—For nearly twelve seasons, Kevin Chavez has been a mainstay on the sidelines for the Women’s Soccer program, and for the past three seasons, he has been sitting in the first chair, assuming position as the Head Coach. Moving forward, Coach Chavez will be assuming a new role.
“It was a family decision to step down as Head Coach, a tough one don’t get me wrong. But I know the program is in good hands and I will still be very involved and active in seeing this program have continued success.”
Chavez will be assuming a new position as Assistant Coach as Chavez’s long time assistant, Scott Smith, will be taking over. In the previous three seasons, the women’s soccer team has had tremendous success, most notably in 2019 where they finished with a record of 12-5 and reached the Region Semi-Finals. Chavez has been instrumental in moving on a large amount of his players to universities of all levels, all over the country. One particular player he coached, still holds the single season record for goals scored, McKaya Brown in 2017 with 23 goals scored.
The program is certainly in good hands with Smith taking over, the Valley native graduated from Dobson High School, attended fellow ACCAC school South Mountain Community College before finishing his career at MacMurray College. Smith has a wealth of coaching experience including a head coaching position at Illinois College and assistant positions at Aurora University and New Mexico State University. Most recently, Smith has been Coach Chavez right hand man.
Chandler Gilbert College Athletic Director Russell Luce said, “Although we are disappointed to see Coach Chavez step down, we are grateful for the path he laid for Scott Smith to take over. We are confident Smith will do a wonderful job in continuing the success Kevin Chavez started for Coyote Women’s Soccer.”
