Chandler, Arizona-- The Men's Soccer team hosted the first round of the ACCAC playoff tournament last night against Scottsdale Community College in what was a rematch from a game the two teams played at Chandler Gilbert College only a few weeks ago. Tensions were running high as the number four seed Coyotes were looking to avenge their loss to the number five seed Fighting Artichokes.
A costly turnover just outside of the eighteen from the Coyotes resulted in the Scottsdale striker being left alone one on one with the Coyote goalkeeper, it slipped past the hands of the Coyote keeper resulting in an early 1-0 lead for Scottsdale, only a few minutes into the game. Michael Johannson, a Coyote midfielder scored the equalizer off of a penalty kick a few minutes later to tie the game at 1-1.
In the second half is when the scoring really came alive as SCC found the back of the net in the 66th minute to gain a 2-1 lead, much to the excitement of the Scottsdale bench and their many fans in attendance. However, 20 minutes later, in the 87th minute, Michael Johannson once again found the back of the net for the Coyotes, re-tying the game. The back and forth action had the large crowd in attendance on the edge of their seats heading into the final three minutes of action.
With less than a minute remaining, Scottsdale put a shot on goal that was corralled in by Coyote keeper Justin Zimmerman, and the Coyotes made a quick transition down the field. Moments later, Abdullahi Mohammed found himself in the box one on one with the Scottsdale goalkeeper, the Scottsdale keeper desperately lunged for the ball even though Mohammed still had it in his possession and with a nifty left to right move Mohammed left the keeper in his wake as he then softly pushed the ball into the back of the net, essentially winning the game for the Coyotes in dramatic fashion. Mohammed was much in the clutch for Coach Esperti's squad.
The CGCC Coyotes now travel to Pima College in Tucson to play Thursday evening in the ACCAC Semifinals.
