Hot Starts Lead To Weekend Wins for Coyote Ball Clubs
Mar 15, 2021

Chandler, Arizona-- Saturday was a big day for Chandler Gilbert College on the diamond as both the baseball team and softball team took the field. The baseball team hosted South Mountain College and the softball squad traveled to Paradise Valley College, respectfully.

The theme of the day was hot starts from the Coyote ball clubs as early game offense paved the way for the teams throughout the day. Despite being up three runs to start the first game of their doubleheader, the baseball team ended up losing 5-3 in extra innings. However, that did not deter the Yotes from battling back in the second game where they scored four runs in the first inning to give themselves a comfortable lead. Even though South Mountain climbed back in the second inning with four runs of their own, the Yotes rallied in the 4th inning scoring three more runs to put the game away. Nick Cupp-Allen lead the way going 3-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.

The softball squad exploded offensively this weekend scoring a combined 29 runs in their two games. While they did have a strong start in their first game with an early first inning run, it was the third inning that allowed the Coyotes to cruise to victory when they scored 11 runs in that inning alone. Liana Ohi was a major contributor with her grand slam and eventual five RBI. They eventually won 15-4.

In the second game of the day, the third inning proved once again to be the key for the Coyotes as they scored nine runs to regain a lead despite being down five. A back and forth game was tied heading into extra innings where the Coyotes were able to inch ahead ever so slightly scoring the go-ahead run in the top half of the 8th, and played strong defense in the bottom half of the inning to come away with the win.

The baseball team travels to Mesa Community College on Tuesday and the softball team will head out to Arizona Western College that same day. Both teams remain in the postseason hunt!
